Capitol World Class Hotel Milan - Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
You are in:
Designed in 1861 by Giuseppe Mengoni and built between 1865 and 1877, this Neo classical 640 foot long cross shaped plan is one of the most beautiful covered galleries in Europe and the first of its kind to use an iron and glass combination.
It links the Piazza della Scala (opera house) to the Roman Gothic Piazza Duomo.
Tragedy occurred in 1867 when Giuseppe Mengoni, the architect, fell to his death from the heights of the glass dome while scrutinizing decorative details two days before King Vittorio Emanuele led the opening ceremony.
One of the last additions was a triumphal arch in 1877, therfore completing this covered link between the famous opera house and the cathedral.
The exquisite 164 foot octagonal glass dome raised high above the crossing, is a representation between the union of the church and state which was born with the triumphant nationlist revolution in 1848.
Today hosting many trendy restaurants and cafès as well as book and record shops, this gallery is visited by millions of visitors, as well as locals, every year.
